Castellammare del Golfo is a delightful town which is set in the centre of a beautiful gulf of the same name, behind which is an area of rough upland rich in luxurious vegetation. A castle rises up on a little peninsula which extends out to the sea, separating the little port from a magnificent beach of fine golden sand.
Thanks to the extraordinary beauty of its coast and strategic location (central compared to other tourist destinations in north-west Sicily), Castellammare today has become an important tourist mecca. The commercial port has numerous functions and is used by the fishing industry and pleasure-boats. Its various monuments included: the Chiesa Madre (main church) and splendid façade by the architect Giuseppe Mariani; the little Rosary church with its magnificent sixteenth century doorway; and the Castle, situated on a little promontary and connected to the original town centre, the latter being made up of original fishermen's cottages.
